This ebook is seemingly primarily based on a college course taught by the writer, and I think that is the source of both its power and its weakness. The material is very structured, delivered in bite-sized items, and adopted by class exercises. I would guess the scholars have already taken a basis course on photographic approach, and then on this course they study artistic photography. There are four major chapters, that cover inventive points of (1) the frame (2) the lens (3) the shutter and (4) the print and presentation.
What's good about this is that the material is nicely-selected to be interesting and efficient with students. There isn't a slavish emphasis on formulas and rules of composition (like the Rule of Thirds). Rather the textual content encourages a extra common consciousness of the effect that every photographic decision has on the ultimate result. That is solely consistent with the viewpoints of great 'straight' photographers like Ansel Adams who rejected rules of composition. The main points are properly taken. This approach empowers the coed to analyze artistic possibilities, and it did help me on this regard.
Paradoxically, slavish adherence to guidelines and formulas seems to have been replaced by an dependancy to philosophical statements (the idea that each artist should have a message and every photograph must make a press release), a few of which appear very contrived. But hey, this is most likely fairly consultant of artwork college.
The guide adopts a non-committal, anything-goes approach to creative photography which has the draw back that some of the text is extremely vague. Even the category exercises are stated in a very vague fashion. (Presumably college students' class workout routines had been assessed and this is where the students get concrete feedback on their efforts, but we of course are denied this).
Regrettably, the amount of core materials within the guide is limited. There's plenty of padding. There's considerable repetition (sometimes a whole paragraph is repeated mechanically from one chapter to the following, which slightly undermines the author's marketing campaign in opposition to rigid formulas). An excessive fraction of the e-book is given over to examples of scholars' work.
It was however fascinating to see some of the students' efforts. A number of the pictures have been extraordinary and thought-frightening, and a few of the statements have been clear and forceful. A number of the statements have been fairly contorted and incomprehensible. The majority of the images were not efficient as photographs, a minimum of for me.
This can be a e-book that's price studying and absorbing once. It has some good points however it will not be the form of e-book that I re-learn each couple of years.
